NACS LENDS A HELPING HAND TO KENYA’S TEEN MUMS

Africa is a continent of young people with approximately 50% of its population under the age of 15. It is also a continent where many people live under the poverty line, existing on less than $1.25 per day. The people suffer from lack of education, health care, sanitation and safe water – all things we take for granted in Australia.

The problem of teen pregnancies and infections with STD’s is very great. Stiff jail sentences have been put in place to punish men who sleep with under-age girls, leading in some instances to their murder at the hands of their abusers. Pregnant girls as young as 13, some infected with HIV, are sent to remand centres hundreds of kilometres away from family and support  to keep them safe. Our Kenyan partners have been approached by the Child Welfare Department asking if we can assist by providing safe accommodation and care for some of these young girls waiting to give birth. Our finances are already stretched to the limit with educating and providing for the needs of over 400 children and young adults attending our school, enrolled in high schools and tertiary colleges, staying in the children’s hostel or living with guardians or single mums. Faced with the plight of these young girls, we feel we must do what we can.

If you would like to help us provide a safe, loving home for these girls please consider giving a tax deductible donation to J396 (teen mums)
