NATIONAL OP SHOP WEEK AUGUST 21 – 27

Op shops have an important role to play, not only in providing good quality pre-loved items at affordable prices, but also in reducing our carbon footprint through saving our unwanted goods from ending up as land fill. The mantra REDUCE – REUSE – RECYCLE reminds us that we can all be involved in making a difference. 20% of the world’s people, mostly western nations, actually use 80% of the world’s resources Donating or buying pre loved goods is an opportunity to make a positive impact on our environment through conscious consumerism. Every tonne of clothing that is recycled saves 11 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Op Shops also provide an opportunity for volunteers to make lasting friendships, use their experience and learn new skills as they work together to make a difference to communities in Australia and overseas. Australia’s 2500 op shops sort around 2 billion items every year and this would not be possible without the thousands of great people who donate their time.

National Op Shop week is also an opportunity to remind those of us who donate that only good quality clean items are saleable. It is estimated that 40% of donated goods are unsaleable and it costs Op shops time and money to dump them on your behalf.

Neighbours Aid is committed to helping the environment through the sale of preloved goods. We value our amazing team of over 200 volunteers who partner with us in helping needy children and families through our projects in Malawi, Kenya and India.

An ideal is one thing; to live up to it is quite another…we may be said to have an ideal only when we put forth an effort to realise it…There is sufficiency for man’s need but not for man’s greed.” Ghandi.
